The sentence came out during an argument
Papa said it plainly: sometimes I am so overwhelmed that I think, what did I do having this baby? It did not arrive as a calm confession. It arrived alongside being told he was constantly negative.
That matters because thoughts like this often appear as frustration before anybody recognises the exhaustion underneath.
It was not only the baby
For us there was NICU, travel, work, a household and endless decisions.
Having the thought did not mean Papa did not love Ari. It meant the whole system was overloaded.
Make the problem smaller and say it aloud
One real block of sleep helped more than a night of lying down while still listening for everything. Naming the specific thing—another hospital run, another broken night—made it something we could share.
If low mood, numbness, panic, hopelessness or withdrawal continues, tell a doctor. Postnatal depression and anxiety can affect either parent. If you might harm yourself or the baby, seek urgent help now.
Call your doctor if
- Low mood or hopelessness that does not lift
- Withdrawing from your partner or baby
- Unable to sleep even when given the chance
- Drinking more or feeling constantly on edge
- Thoughts of harming yourself or the baby
