Everybody wants to meet the baby

Almost nobody remembers what a visit costs when you have barely slept. People are excited. You are still allowed to protect your home and your energy.

Decide the rules before the doorbell rings

We agreed how long visits would be, which days were closed and who would say no. Putting it in a message was much easier than making it up at the door.

Because Ari was premature, we were extra careful. We asked visitors to wash their hands, not kiss her face or hands, and stay away if they felt unwell. At times, especially during flu season, we also asked people to wear a mask.

Those were our boundaries for our baby. If you are unsure what precautions your newborn needs, ask your baby’s doctor or nurse.

Simple words are enough

“We would love to see you. Can you come between two and three?”

“We are not doing visitors this week.”

“She is due a feed, so I am taking her now.”

“If you are coming, could you bring dinner?”

You do not owe anyone a long explanation. A short visit, a closed week or no baby-holding can all be the right choice for your family.

Call your doctor if

  • Your newborn has a temperature of 38°C or more
  • Your baby feeds much less or is hard to wake
  • Breathing looks difficult or your baby seems very unwell
