Most nappy rash is moisture plus rubbing
A sore bottom can appear quickly when skin stays wet or rubs against a nappy. Ordinary irritation often sits on the raised skin rather than deep in the creases.
Our simple routine
We changed Ari often, especially after a dirty nappy. Fragrance-free 99.9% water wipes were gentler for us, and washing under running water worked even better when she was very sore.
We patted dry instead of rubbing, then left a visible layer of barrier cream. Frezyderm Baby Bottom Cream was the one we liked for Ari, though another baby may suit something else.
A little nappy-free time on a towel also helped. It was messy, but her skin got a break.
When it needs another look
If the rash reaches the skin folds, spreads, develops little spots or does not improve after a few days of careful barrier care, ask your baby’s doctor or pharmacist.
Blisters, open sores, bleeding, pus, fever or a baby in a lot of pain also deserve medical advice.
We would avoid talc, fragranced products and leftover medicated creams that were prescribed for something else.
Call your doctor if
- No improvement after a few days
- Blisters, open sores, pus or bleeding
- Rash spreading beyond the nappy area
- Fever or significant pain
